Zetto's favorite movies of 2010... so far 1. Toy Story 3 Toy Story 3 is a film that you just can't kepp your eyes off of. It's entertaining, visually dazzling, hilariously written, and in the end, one of the most amazing experiences that you'll ever have the pleasure of viewing. Pixar always manages to keep you laughing, and keep you riveted to the screen, but at the same time, they're teaching you life lessons. In this film, we learn that letting go of someone, does not make you love them any less. And that is a beautiful point. Each scene is written and animated with terrific dialogue, and amazing visual effects. With Toy Story 3, Pixar proves once again that not only do they care about the extremely high pay check that they will receive, but more so, they care about the craft of their artwork. Toy Story 3 not only lives up to the long line of Pixar masterpieces, but exceeds most of them, and that's really saying something. I guarantee, no film in 2010 will move you and touch your heart, more than Lee Unkrich's Toy Story 3.
(This year's Pixar effort, Toy Story 3, is an A+ film. The0 colors are vivid, and the detail and effects are outstanding, but what matter most, is that Toy Story 3 has a heart and soul, ranking this to be one of the greatest sequels ever made) 2. The Runaways Floria Sigismoni's The Runaways, is an extremely appreciable movie to me, among other reasons, because it showed me that Kristen Stewart, who plays Joan Jett, can act. In fact, this movie has terrific performances, all around. Dakota Fanning, one of my favorite young actresses, is fantastic as Cherie Currie. And Michael Shannon gives a phenomenal character performance as their band manager. This the story of The Runaways, mainly the two leads, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, and how they started from the beginning, and in a way, made it to the top. Of course there's a lot of controversy (what great drama doesn't have controvery?) involving sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll, which eventually leads to the end of the band. But each scene is fun, entertaining, and well paced. The film is unpredictable, fascinating, and riveting. It's about the characters, characters you relate to, and that go through problems. It's a mature film, that really takes you somewhere, and at the same, it's high on entertainment value. The Runaways is a triumph of a film.
(The best bio pic of 2010 is Floria Sigimoni's The Runaways, which mainly brought together by some great performances by the ensemble cast.) 3. Greenberg I loved Noah Baumbach's Greenberg. I loved it, because it's smart, clever, and funny. The charaters are alive. And the movie relies on dialogue, acting, and cinematography. That's exactly what I want to see in a film. Ben Stiller gives a different than usual performance as the title character, Roger Greenberg. It's more of a three-dimensional perforamance than what Stiller typically portrays in his characters, he's always good, but this might very well be his best performance. Another great performance is Greta Gerwig as Greenberg's love interest, Florence. She deserves nothing less than an Oscar nomination. Her performance is honest, sad, yet, cheerful. With this film we get good performances, good story, good dialogue, and a tearingly moving conclusion, and that's why Greenberg is a great film.
(Noah Baumbach's Greenberg is charming, sad, moving, and funny. Each cinematical element supports the next, scoring Greenberg, as a grand achievement.) 4. The Kids Are All Right The Kids Are All Right is a raw, often funnny and an originally well written screenplay. All these characters are explained and developed, and the performances are just magnificent. Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska are great as the 2 children of the lesbian couple, played by Julianne Moore, and Anette Bening who give what may very well be the two best performances of the year. The story circles the curiosity that the two children, Hutcherson and Wasikowska, have for their biological father Paul, played in an outstanding career best performance from the always good Mark Rufallo. The story line is tragic, complex, funny, and moving. Lisa Cholodenko's The Kids Are All Right is a movie I'm sure will get multiple Oscar nominations, and hopefully the very deserving Bening will get her first. |
